▣ Abstract :

Driven by recent global warming concerns, the imperative to reduce carbon emissions and meet RE100 initiatives has intensified. Consequently, hydrogen energy has emerged as a critical clean energy alternative. However, when hydrogen interacts with metallic materials, it triggers hydrogen embrittlement (HE), which significantly degrades material properties. This degradation compromises the structural integrity of hydrogen infrastructure and can lead to catastrophic safety accidents. Therefore, accurately evaluating hydrogen embrittlement in materials used for hydrogen infrastructure is of paramount importance.

To address this, various measurement methods for hydrogen embrittlement are actively being developed. Notably, since establishing the Hydrogen Safety Building in 2009, the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) has been at the forefront of developing diverse testing methodologies and advancing measurement technologies for hydrogen embrittlement.

This presentation introduces the various testing systems operated by KRISS and details the experimental methodologies used to evaluate mechanical properties under high-pressure hydrogen environments. It provides a practical perspective on how these mechanical tests are actually conducted. Furthermore, it demonstrates how the measured mechanical properties and hydrogen embrittlement data are ultimately utilized in practical applications, such as infrastructure design and life-cycle assessment.
