    • Title: Introduction of thermal spray process

    • Abstract:

Thermal spray process is a kind of spray coating method, which can fabricate wide range of materials(metals, ceramics, polymers, and their composites) onto various components. As a promising and versatile coating technique, thermal spray process have been widely used in various industrial fields such as aerospace, shipbuilding, automotive, semiconductor, paper, petrochemical, and power generation. Due to its advantages(wide range of feedstock material, high deposition rate, low cost, simple system, etc.), thermal spray has been a fascinating choice for some components, which exposed to harsh environments. In this seminar, basic knowledge, process mechanism, applications, and case studies conducted by korea institute of materials science(KIMS) are presented for the future researchers in POSTECH. The seminar first starts with the necessity of coating in the view point of material engineering. The definition and basic knowledge of thermal spray process is suggested. Process mechanism includes deposition mechanism of coating and some examples are presented regarding coating fabrication. Different kind of thermal spray processes(flame spray, high velocity oxyfuel spray, twin wire arc spray, plasma spray, cold spray) are introduced to the audience regarding process schematics, system principle, and examples in real industries. Finally, researches conducted by KIMS are introduced and the general research method to find out best coating is suggested. After participating this seminar, the audience will get the general information of thermal spray process and KIMS.
